The Jed Report: McCain Loses It: Calls Americans 'My Fellow Prisoners'

  • DW2 · 1 year ago
Wow... he didn't even notice that he had said it. Also, I didn't notice any kind of reaction from ole Sarah, there. Maybe she was zoned out...it isn't like McCain is a very inspiring speaker, after all.
  • Verified · 1 year ago
Poor Sarah is getting tired too. All that prancing about in heels. Needs a fresh transfusion of fresh moose blood.
  • Debra Moore/Milwaukee · 1 year ago
Wait, but was he really referring to "his fellow prisoners" while he was a POW? Its just not enough of the tape played to really understand the context. But if he really was referring to fellow americans, then my fears have been confirmed. I feared that he was harboring some kind of warped revenge on the WORLD for the time he spent as a POW and it lies just underneath the surface of his conscious mind.
  • runnerin1 · 1 year ago
For 5 1/2 years McCain couldn't refer to anybody....

The old fart needs a vacation and R&R.

Boy did the anti-Semite Sean Hannity get his ass served up on a plate over the Ayers non-issue by Obama's spokesperson here. Colmes rode in as the voice of reason, and actually let a person talk, unlike Hannity (and O'Reilly) who can never interview anyone they disagree with without screaming, interrupting, and talking over them.

Hanity is such an ass...and evidently, an anti-Semite, who thinks "Jews are slimy."

  • WestCoastian · 1 year ago
I was watching it on CNN and I thought I was hearing things! I was zoning out with him at the podium but that sure made me perk up my ears. lol

The reason I was zoning out was because I was thinking how he had more fire in him at this rally than he did at the debate last night. I sure didn't hear him asking Obama directly about some of his accusations, did you?
  • davidfromsandiego · 1 year ago
ok this is a mayor gaffe, are we all prisoners of this republican government now?
  • Genevieve · 1 year ago
I think it was intentional. This is all calculated. It's probably the most organized thing that his half@ssed campaign has done since it started. Could they be channeling Volger?

Oh, and here is some news.. Obama plans to oppose McCain's resurge plan.... it would be too big a burden on the taxpayers..

    gen:

mccain is trying to pander and run to the left to flank obama, it's a war strategy, you obviously mistake a tactic with a strategy, it is clear you don't understand, your not ready to lead, that's not change we can believe in on 'that one".

  • mlhradio · 1 year ago
Yeah, I caught that as well, and thought "Did he *really* just say that?" The crowd was just silent for about 10-15 seconds, even as he finished his point, clearly confused, and didn't pick up again until a couple of sentences later.

It was just a minor verbal gaffe - I'm sure many on the left will gleefully point to it as an example of his senility. And I do agree it sure sounds bad, but really - there's plenty more to attack McCain over the issues, instead of these minor little verbal miscues. If you REALLY want to needle Fibber McCain over something he said, then focus on the "THAT ONE" comment from last night, which was a clear and intentional jab with overt racist tones. There's no covering that one up, or explaining it away - it stuck out like a sore thumb.
  • RobertSeattle · 1 year ago
Ir'a one thing to say a gaffe, it's completely another thing to say a gaffe and just continue speaking without realziing it.

Donna Brazile. This is a powerful video clip. She hits it out of the park.
  • Pete · 1 year ago
    Thanks Genevieve,

Now that's the kind of thing that makes me proud to be an American (real pride, as opposed to flag lapel pin pride).
  • JillyG · 1 year ago
    Genevieve, Re: Donna Brazile link

There is just something very genuine and real about Donna Brazile. Smart and evenhanded--very politically astute. And boy is she fired up! I have never seen her so animated.

I also love it when she talks about cookin' for Obama "--cause he looks like he needs it." She said something on Charlie Rose the other night that was pretty funny. She said that she wanted to invite Barack over and cook him some neckbones and gravy.

    Jilly,

    (re:Donna Brazille)
She's awesome! I always enjoy listening to her insights.

If McCain is continuing to link Obama to Ayers, I want someone to point out he is taking campaign funds from a known "domestic terrorist" associate that not only sat on the same board of directors as William Ayers and Barack Obama, but GAVE BILL AYERS FATHER, THOMAS AYERS, HIS JOB.

His name? Arnold R. Weber. And he gave $1500.00 to the McCain campaign just this year.

Arnie Weber is an unrepentant "associate" of this "domestic terrorist". Sources indicate that, through Thomas Ayers, Arnie Weber may have arranged a job for Bill Ayers' wife, BERNADINE DOHRN, another person associated with the Weather Underground.

If this wasn't so scary, I'd almost feel sorry for him. Almost.
His family and friends need to intervene and bail/rescue him to spare him any more embarrassment in the sunset of his life.

It's actually sad that he's being allowed to make a complete idiot out of himself, not to mention putting the country in danger, should he, god forbid, win.

  • Tom · 1 year ago
His mental condition just makes Palin that much more relavent, and frightening. It would be great to have someone go through his speach and give the truth behind his anti-Obama points. For example, small business created x number of jobs and Obama will hurt that effort. The truth would be pointed more towards large business cutting 3x number of jobs - good paying jobs - and some of these jobs were replaced with non-union, low paying jobs in small outsourcers, etc. It's too big a job for me, but I'd enjoy the read.
  • skteoievtehr · 1 year ago
I know this is serious business about McCain and his mental state, but these people are so ridiculous. It's hard not to laugh at them and their Mavericktacular nominees. Nailed it, again Johnny! Good going!

He said it, we are all prisoners of a mindless, corrupt administration that John McCain has been kissing up to for the last eight years......Sarah didn't flinch, she has regarded the people of Alaska as her prisoners for years..............Can we have some more fish heads Ms Sarah,.............. Mr John will you tell the rich folks to throw their table scraps out the window,.........we prisoners will be waiting in the dungeon below with out fingers outstretched to catch them as they fall the window by,..........We promise not to let any fall and litter the grounds.......we promise.......

Dude is having Nam flashbacks. Americablog is convinced that McCain is hiding a serious medical condition. John Av. will probably be all over this.
  • Ron · 1 year ago
I saw this speach and this was taken completely out of context to suit an agenda. Anyone can be taken out of context, you or I.

This is hardly a reason to vote for Obama.

Facts people...not games, unless you are a stupid voter and need this "data" to make your decision of who to vote for.
  • ezpz · 1 year ago
Ron, so what WAS the context?
He clearly said "my fellow prisoners" just after he talked of traveling all around the country.
  • sandy · 1 year ago
The daughter behind him realized what he said and she looks totally embarrassed. Caribou Barbie looks clueless and like she's scanning the audience for admirers. These 2 are just pathetic.

  • 2008FedUP · 1 year ago
Hmmm prisoners can't vote. Ok cancel the election, I am sure that's where he's going with this folks!
  • skteoievtehr · 1 year ago
This is one of those mistakes that is going to get a lot of coverage. It's funny and simple and says it all. When people hear that McCain is so confused that he's calling us his "fellow prisoners" they're going to run in the other direction (even more so than they already have). Anyone worried about McCain's age this election cycle--and polls say it's a bigger worry than "race"--is going to have a hard time understanding why we should trust a 72 year old, who admittedly doesn't know jack shit about the economy, with the economic crisis.

    Tim,

Also been watching AMericaBlog's discussion of McCain's health. VEERRRRY interesting. No doubt they're going to latch on to this gaffe, as they should.

    I hear a landslide coming...
  • TimF · 1 year ago
Ron - You're right in that THIS instance is not a big deal and it's dumb to even talk about but...

This is about a larger problem: McCain's health.

He's seems to forget positions he took the day before.
His face starts going into convultions from time-to-time
He's evidently taking some kind of a supplement to help his memory and energy from Bill "My Wife can get the good shit" Romanowski.
Now he's having some kind of a Nam flashback.

The guy has something going on. So it's not just about this slip up. It's about the big picture.
  • Jed Lewison · 1 year ago
I removed Ron's post -- this was not taken out of context at all (as you can see in the vodpod). His post was either a troll post (it wasn't the Ron who has posted here before) or it was misinformed.
  • Genevieve · 1 year ago
Ben Smith has your video featured on his blog..

also here is a link to the tspeech McCain was supposed to deliver.

CITIZENS is what he should have said.
  • ezpz · 1 year ago
    Genevieve, thanks for the link.

citizens - prisoners - both have 3 syllables, each with the short i sound in the first syllable.
That he didn't catch and correct the slip is very telling and VERY unsettling.

I wonder if fair & balanced Sean Hannity will be on a tirade tonight on his show about “Why did John McCain call the United States of America a prison?” Can you imagine the entire Reich-publican Party if Barack Obama made that gaffe?

Sad how sad. Flashbacks to the Hanoi Hilton. No longer ready to be president.

John McCain is too old for the job. He is clearing showing signs of early dementia.

    middlegirl3,

We were talking about that last night. In a nut shell: Mr. & Mrs. Obama have genuine grace, class, and manners. They will serve and represent us well as the President and First Lady of the United Sates. Unlike the national embarrassment we have at the moment.

thanks for providing the entire video. i like to see things in full context before concluding anything.

and for the record--i don't think his "that one" comment had racist connotations. mccain's just a jerk. that isn't to say that he isn't a RACIST jerk (he's probably said much worse in the privacy of his own home(s)), but i don't think that particular comment was meant to be a racist one. it was dismissive, petty and angry/fearful, but i didn't see it as a race-based comment. sounded more like "that young naive whippersnapper" type of thing to my ears. my race radar didn't perk up when i heard it. just my humble opinion...
  • abc · 1 year ago
I was expecting more gaffes from Failin, not McSame. Still, it's nice to be entertained
  • thorswitch · 1 year ago
Ok - here's clear evidence it wasn't an intentional metaphor. The Chicago Tribune has the text of his speech as it was intended to be delivered, and it shows that he was supposed to say "my fellow citizens" *not* "prisoners"
  • icruise · 1 year ago
What with all the gaffes coming from Palin and McCain, I'm actually starting to feel a little sorry for them. Maybe that's the plan?

  • goatchowder · 1 year ago
what was that guy in the audience yelling while mccain was speaking?

was it a rabid, unhinged mccain supporter, calling for the blood of senator obama? or was it a code pink or other protester heckling mccain?

clearly, he was thinking about something other than what he was speaking about.
  • LucyLu6p · 1 year ago
McCain looks stiff and drugged to me at the debate, did anyone notice later in the debate when Obama was standing and speaking, McCain appeared in the camera lens just to the left of Obama and even walked alittle past him toward the audience and gave a hand signal or weird wave to someone in the audience? perhaps his wifie?? that wasn,t natural or appropriate either, maybe he forgot where he was???
  • jukaswo · 1 year ago
I think he did it on purpose. After all, it's been a few days since we were reminded that he was a POW. This was just his attempt at subliminally getting that message across again!
  • Conservative · 1 year ago
Let's see John McCain makes this comment during a campaign stop and he's lost his mental faculties. Joe Biden in a control sit down tells how the FDR went on TV to explain the Crash of 1929. What's his excuse????? And why didn't the liberal news media jump all over him? Answers its own question, doesn't it?
  • Martin Gifford · 1 year ago
Someone above wrote: "It was just a minor verbal gaffe"

But why "prisoners" and not something like "my fellow politicians"?

Saying "prisoners" DECADES AFTER his IMPRISONMENT and TORTURE, seems to indicate something unhealthy going on.
  • SLB · 1 year ago

why is no one explaining joe biden's gaffe? McCain had a slip of the tongue but either Joe Biden doesn't know history or he is so use to hyperbole that he doesn't know the truth
  • gc wall · 1 year ago
Since McCain/Palin supporters have taken to the idea of cheering at the end of every statement their candidates make, like a period is a signal to cheer, it is startling that even they hesitated a moment or two when they heard that they were fellow prisoners. In a subtle way they are the candidates prisoners, because they are forced to act enthusiastically about two of the most absurd candidates for the executive branch Americans have seen since LaRouche.
  • skywatch · 1 year ago

A friend's father is an 88 year old retire bank president. He still thinks clearly. He said that by the time one is seventy years old he is well past his prime, (generally thought to be in one's late fourties to early fifties,) and should not be president of the U.S. Subtle capabilities are lost and anyone in his seventies and older realizes this to be true. He said that he may live to be one-hundred, but he will never again be what he was in his fifties.
